Which university in Germany should I apply for M.Sc (Computer Science?

Is it worth pursuing a MSc in Computer Science in Europe if I plan to go into industry?

  • A few details: I have one year left of a BSc program in Computer Science at a fairly good university from Europe. The problem is that we were forced to take a lot of mandatory courses that do not interest me (electronics, microcontrollers, etc) and I feel that in a way I wasted precious time that could have been alloted to studying computer science topics. I think the MSc program (done in Europe) at a top university could offer me the opportunity to get to know better some of the fields that I am interested in (e.g.: Distributed Systems). However, I plan to go into industry afterwards. So, given the aforementioned details, do you think is it worth pursuing a MSc program at a top university in Europe, or should I go straight into industry and learn the details there? Thanks!

  • Answer:

I'd do some applications to both. If you can get a job doing software development somewhere you want to be, that's going to give you way more valuable experience for industry than a master's will. If you can't and get into a master's program you like, go get that additional book-knowledge and spend some spare time hacking on things.

The situation may be different in Europe, but these are my thoughts on this subject for the US case: http://lesswrong.com/lw/jy6/open_thread_2430_march_2014/aqfv
