How to become a product manager?

How can I become a good product manager by going the developer/SDE route?

  • I'm currently a developer with about 3.5 years of experience in terms of a full time job and internships. I intend to remain a developer for a couple(?) of more years. But eventually Id like to become a product manager, simply because I'd love to actually build an idea from scratch to launch passionately and follow through all aspects of it. I'm wondering whether such a switch would be possible and what steps I should take now to better equip myself for it.

    Of course the switch is possible, in fact many/most PM's have a background in development. Two great first steps are to read through Jackie Bavaro's https://pmblog.quora.com and then the book she co-authored with Gayle Laakmann McDonald, @. Between the two sources you should be able to get a sense for which skills to develop and how to best position yourself for the future. I would also recommend asking Product folks how they moved into the field, their career paths and experiences. Best of luck!

The switch is certainly possible; however, you shouldn't underestimate what it takes to be a "good Product Manager".  It's not just as simple as building an idea and following through with it.  Depending on the industry and market area you're focused on, the business  and marketing component of it may be very significant and that is the part that many people with a development background are not really prepared to take on.  Those are the skills that you should work on developing.  The book references the previous answer provided should be good for that.Chuck Cobb Author of "The Project Manager's Guide to Mastering Agile" Check out:  http://agileprojectmanagementacademy.com/pages/free
