How to sort by distance in Lucene Spatial?

Why doesn't OKCupid have a feature, free or paid, to sort matches exclusively by distance?

  • There is a "Match and Distance" option, but nothing to sort just by distance.  I'd be willing to pay for that...

    This feature would be most useful in places where there is a minimal population density of users.  Because OkC has primarily an urban demographic, they are less incentivized to compete for areas where they're not popular, and have not prioritized this feature.

I think this feature would be most useful for the mobile app, not for the site itself. In the case of the mobile app, you already can use it to find people who are close (ie, in the same basic neighborhood area) using Locals. I think if they tried to rank users by geographic distance, they'd run into issues of difficulty accuracy, followed quickly by the issue of relevance.

Not sure when this was asked, but if you pay to be A-list, you can sort by distance alone in the custom sort.
