When going to the Passport Office, what ID do you need to take?

My family moved to a new home one month ago. I need to apply for a passport, as I am going abroad 6 months from now. What documents can/should I submit at the passport Seva Kendra office as address proof?

  • Or is it not possible to get passport to my new address because we have been staying there for only one month? What other options do I have, to get a passport in that case? Thank you

I think obtaining a passport is all about pleasing the bureaucracy. I have heard getting a passport in India is a pretty arduous deal, but I was saved this hassle as I obtained mine during a "passport mela" at my University. But to answer your question, a friend of mine had been through a similar experience where she had just moved (close-by cities) and wanted to get a passport too. The question lies in what is the address listed on your document for address proof (ration card, Aadhar card). Also, do you have access to this residence for a couple of hours when the police come by for address verification. Atleast this worked for her.

To my knowledge, one has to provide the latest electricity/BSNL telephone bills and bills dating one year prior to that. If you have a bank account in any Nationalised bank, that too is considered as a valid document for address proof, provided you have transactions dating back to a year. So if possible apply to the bank regarding the change of address and get the new passbook. Another advice is that if the previous property (address) is in the same city and under your family's name, I would see no harm in seeking the passport on the same address. (It would be easier and hassle free). You can always apply for change of address later. If both the solutions aren't suitable, your best bet would be to contact the nearest Passport office and tell them about the situation. They usually ask to make some affidavits and stuff in such cases. Hope this helps.

I think it would be better if you obtain passport on your previous address. It would be hassle free.

You must be having a bank account. You can update your address on it and use it as an address proof. if you dont have an account, you can apply for it. You can make a letter with your name and address on it. Also paste a photo and self attest it.Get this letter attested by a gazetted officer. Now you can use this letter as an address proof and can open your account with it. TheĀ  you can use your bank passbook as address proof for passport.
