How do you know you are an alcoholic?

How do I know if my partner is an alcoholic?

  • My husband likes to drink (usually quite heavily) but I'm not sure he is an alcoholic. How do I know the difference between a heavy drinker and an addict who needs help? He can never have just one drink, it always leads to a heavy night. However he never drinks in the morning or even likes spirits. He's in his late 30s and has always liked a drink. We now have 2 kids and I'm worried that this will only get worse. Would appreciate anyone who can share their experiences of what signs to look out for.

  • Answer:

In your question you have already answered the 2 main requirements for the most simple diagnosis of alcoholism. Loss of control, by stating that he can never have just one, and progressiveness by suggesting that things will only get worse over time, assuming that you know this because they have already gotten worse over time.

He is certainly abusing alcohol. He may or may not have graduated to full blown alcoholism, however it does not matter what label you put on his drinking because from your description he already needs treatment. The sooner he decides to get treatment, the fewer consequences he, you and your kids will experience and the less trouble he will have making the transition to a life without alcohol and drugs (because that is his only alternative). http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/alcoholism/DS00340/DSECTION=symptoms
