Could Quora benefit by not forcing users to add topics to their own questions?
-
I think there could be a benefit to not forcing users to add categories to questions, and to compensate, quora could incentivize people to gain credits by adding them for the original poster. The most major benefit would be that I can then randomly post questions wherever I am. One pain point in Quora is that I spend a lot of time trying to game categories. I want to get my question seen, but at the same time I don't want to annoy anybody. You could even allow people to "double add" categories to questions, because this could be a good way to determine category relevance. So, if 10 people add "startup" as a category, but only 1 person adds "Facebook" as a category, it should probably be seen more by people who follow startups, and not facebook. The main reason I suggest this feature is because I want to reduce the friction when adding questions. I want to post a ton of questions and do it quickly without caring what category it should be posted in. For example, if I was using a more mobile technology like Google Glass, it might not make sense to add categories anyways. Just imagine trying to add categories to a question with a technology like that, it would be super annoying. Quora could be an ultimate intelligence some day, sorta like a Watson, but with more human intelligence, and therefor more relevant. I realize it'd take a bit of engineering, but it could be a fun way for people to who don't get a lot of credits to earn some, while improving the system and reducing friction.

Answer:
Perhaps, however, there is a little problem with automating it or leaving it to the community. The OP could be looking for answers relating to Philosophy with the Question being about religion (in other words looking for the broad answer). Assigning Topics is our way of distinguishing that from a religious question about the particulars of religion.
