How do companies market their products?

How does Horizon manage to bring milk products to market with expiration dates a month or more in the future? That's fantastic. Other companies have shelf lives of less than a week.

  • I don't work for Horizon.  But I find myself looking for their products - and paying higher prices - because of this convenience.

  • Answer:

Long milk shelf lives are usually due to the great technology of pasteurization. The longer something is pasteurized, the longer it will last because the bacteria that begin the spoilage process have been kept at bay. Check your carton for the acronym UHT, it means the milk was brought to 275° F for one second. Normal pasteurization is 161° F for 15 to 20 seconds.

UHT means Ultra-High-Temperature.  While they are doing that, they are also applying other new technologies.  One is to force the milk (and it's milk fat content) through a fine screen, which breaks up the fat particles much smaller than the usual homogenization process.  With the result that UHT (long-life) milk actually tastes creamier.
