What can I do with a MS and PhD in Environmental Science?

What are the issues of changing from a BME (undergrad) to CS/Data Science (MS/PhD)?

  • I am currently a senior BME student. Currently, I am confused about where to go in the future. I see the problems with Biomedical Engineering, in terms of more M.S. and PhD students to fill current jobs. Also, I found that I do not like the long experiment times that come with the major. At the moment, I am an intern for IBM, and I see the need for people to go into data science and data analytics. Therefore, I am exploring more into that field, but I'm quite worried that my BME background will be a disadvantage in my competitiveness for graduate school. Let me know if I need to provide more information in regards to my academic standing/qualifications.

  • Answer:

You're coming from an engineering background and have an internship with IBM.  I think you might be stressing out about it too much.   If you haven't finished undergrad yet, try to take some stats courses this coming year.  Work experience (internship and especially post-grad experience) will do wonders for your application as well, especially if you work in an environment where you can get your name on publications.
