How To Serch Location?

How can I remove the Location menu bar item in OS X Lion?

  • I use Undercover by Orbicule. Part of the service is tracking the location of a Mac so that if it's stolen it can help track it down. The first time I fired up Lion the Undercover root process, 'uc', requested to find the location so Lion asked me first. If I power off my Mac for over 24 hours and then it's stolen is Lion going to ask the thief if 'uc' can access the location? Additionally, having given my permission to 'uc' to have my location,  Lion leaves an un-removeable Location arrow in the menu bar to remind me that 'uc' has asked for my location. This is information I don't need, and nor does a thief. So, can I turn off Location Services? And if not can I at least remove the menu bar item, or stop it listing the existence of my security apps?

  • Answer:

You can disable the menu by dragging /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.locationmenu.plist out of its folder. That will remove the menu. You can always bring the menu item back by moving the plist file back in its folder. Then open activity monitor and kill locationmenu.
