T-SHIRT DESIGN SOFTWARE?

How can I both develop and demonstrate to an employer that I have great potential in software and user interface design?

  • I don't have a design qualification, and I haven't even studied computer science or software design or development or anything like that. I realised by accident through being an Excel developer since leaving uni, randomly, that I am passionate about designing interfaces and menus, and have the obsessive attention to detail, user-friendliness and aesthetics that make me think I would both enjoy and excel at software design or interface design.   Although my experience and projects have all been with Excel and VBA, I've put 6/7 years' hard work (including a lot of my own time and reading) into not only getting better at coding but at designing the interfaces the user will interact with, and architecting the structure of different menus to achieve specified functionality.   If you want to be a programmer (which also interests me), there are endless obvious avenues of reading/study/work/exploration.   But when it comes to interface or software design, it's hard to even identify the jobs, qualifications or routes I could be taking to develop a career in software or user interface design. It's hard to even know what the names of possible job roles and different types of software design careers would be.

    Demonstrate your potential. Make something.

Adding on to the anonymous answer below, it may be a good idea to pick up an application / UI that you think you can improve, and start building from there. Pick a module from that UI in the beginning, rather than focussing on the whole UI. For example, a sharing module in pinterest (which i think is pretty great so this is just a hypothetical... fyi) Do research. What do you think is the weakness of that particular module, and where is it currently failing? Having some data on this will help your case study much more. Focusing on the weaknesses, redesign a solution that is linear to the design of the whole application. Unless you are redesigning the entire environment of the application, you don't want to user random colors, fonts, or styles for the redesign coz it wont sit well with the current UI. Drive your point home. Explain how this solution will cover those prior weaknesses, and how simple or intuitive it can be. Focus on the core aspect of what you changed, and why you changed them. Don't forget to specify why you took this particular approach... why not some other style or option in the redesign. This shows you have considered alternatives and designed the one that you thinks is the most beneficial to the entire environment. Collate all this info into one short and straightforward presentation This should ideally be more than enough for the employer to reconsider your positions in the team, and test you out in the design team.
