Why did some chimps evolve into humans, and some remain chimpanzees?

Is it disturbing that humans are closer to chimpanzees than chimps are to gorillas?

  • Answer:

I suppose it is, to many.  Doesn't bother me though.  At least, I'm not too disturbed to know that I am such a close relative of other animals.  Whatever. I guess what might be disturbing about it is that Gorillas seem to be much gentler creatures than common chimpanzees are.  Chimps are amazing animals, but they can do some horrible things that hint at the capacity for evil in humans.  Usually when an animal does something "bad", the enlightened among us realize that that is just their nature, and that, being animals, they are innocent because they don't have the capacity for understanding morality or true empathy.  Chimps, on the other hand, have sophisticated enough brains that we can't entirely say that.  When we see a chimp kill another chimp or a monkey in a particularly cruel way.....it's a little different than seeing a cat torture a mouse. That is what can be truly disturbing.

It doesn't distub me anymore than it distubs me that I'm more closely related to my cousin than to my best friend. It's just evolution, genetics and inheritance, nothing really disturbing.

Nope. We share over 90% of our DNA with all species of primates. We share over 80% of our DNA with mice, dogs and cats. You have to understand that humans, just like every other animal on the face of the planet, evolved from the same basic life-form (whatever that was) which split off from plants millenia ago, and the DNA we all have contains many of the same genes. We're not special, or superior, or made of a special sort of win. We're just another animal. An unusually brainy animal who is super good at changing his environment to suit him instead of the other way around. But still just an animal, which shares the same basic genetic information as every other animal, to one degree or another.

Is it disturbing that broccoli is green and summer squash is yellow? Anyone who is disturbed by reality needs to reevaluate his conceptions about his place in the universe.  What if we were closer to alligators than to chimpanzees?  Or to pumpkins?  What is, is, it's neither disturbing nor comforting, it's just reality.  (I'd rather be related to Koko than to some human beings I''ve known.)

I don’t find it disturbing, but I also know what it means and what it doesn’t mean.   It means the common ancestor of chimps and humans lived more recently than the common ancestor of chimps and gorillas. It also means that any randomly chosen section of chimp DNA is likely to be more similar to human DNA than it is to gorilla DNA.   It doesn’t mean that chimps are necessarily more similar to humans, morphologically or behaviorally,  than they are to gorillas. Most sequences of DNA in any given genome don’t affect those things.  If two lineages split off from a common ancestor, most sequences of DNA in both those lineages will change slowly and randomly over time due to genetic drift. That’s why the number of differences tends to reflect the amount of time the lineages have been separated.   But the DNA sequences that affect morphology or behavior are subject to natural selection in addition to genetic drift. It is natural selection that has produced our many differences from both chimps and gorillas. The lineage leading eventually to humans moved into the African savannahs, and began adapting to those environments, while the lineages leading to chimps and gorillas stayed in the jungles and continued to adapt to those. Since our lineage adapted to an unusual environment, it’s not surprising that our morphology and behaviors are unusual as compared to both gorillas and chimps, despite the fact that chimps are more closely related to us than they are to gorillas.

I'm not disturbed by it, but I'm also not emotionally attached to the idea that our species is something elevated by a god onto a special pedestal .

Not to me, and that's all I can say for certain in answer to a subjective question. But let me ask this, "Why would it be?" Is it disturbing that we are more closely related to mice than to Tyranodons? Is it disturbing that our entire world is closer in mass to a dust mote than a star? Should I be disturbes that I am more closely related to John Wilkes Booth than to Lincoln? We are what we are. I have never understood why anyone would or could find our place on the tree of life offensive, insulting, or disturbing in any way. In fact, I am especially amazed by theists who hold this view. Biologically, we are apes. To be deride this relation is to demean the work of the creator who made it so--even if he didn't create us quite as our Iron Age ancestors imagined.

I think it's beautiful! The fact that we're in some ways very much like chimps (and bonobos, the other species in the Pan genus) allows us a window into our own evolution.

Emily McCauslin

Depends on what you think really. We call ourselves Homo sapiens sapiens, sapiens meaning genius, twice yet we sometimes act so barbaric as if we were some wild crazy animal and even animals. So I don't really think it's about the genetic differences but just how the individual chooses to behave.

Silicon Dioxide

Why would it be? it's our species and we evolved in different ways, and we're still similar, so waht's the problem? in fact if you get really really deep in the evolution path, we evolved from reptiles as well, all species in this planets are like a big family of colors and shapes and skills, i don't see where the shame is....
