Where is best school to study French in Paris?

Which school is the best for studying social science: University College of London, McGill, or Jacobs University Bremen? Why?

  • Greetings everyone! :) I am graduating from high school in China and have three universities in completely different countries. They are all really attractive to me. 1. McGill is relatively cheaper, with good reputation. According to Wekipedia, Montreal is the second largest primarily French-speaking city in the world, after http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pariss. I am very interested in learning new languages, and so I think it may be easier for me to learn a new language where many people speak the language. I was admitted to both Faculty of Arts and Desautels Faculty Management. (I prefer the first one).   2. Jacobs University Bremen has a small class size and strong Integrated Social Science program, and I can learn German. Yet many people said they even don't know this university, and it's a really new university. My parents are even worrying about the probability of it going bankruptcy... These are the only drawbacks that I have come up with.   3. UCL has a really long history and it is definitely beneficial to students who wish to study social sciences such as anthropology, sociology or political science. My program is Arts and Science with one year study abroad. I would spend three years in London and one year abroad (hopefully I can study in Science Po in France).   Really looking forward for all kinds of advice from all over the world =) With lots of thanks.

If you choose McGill, I would suggest taking the offer from Desautels.  A management degree opens lots of doors an arts degree does not.  The employment options available to Management graduates in North America are generally superior to those open to most Arts majors (with the possible exception of economics). You can take all your electives in arts, and focus your management coursework on elements of management that are grounded in the social sciences (OB and HR both contain elements of industrial-organizational psychology; consumer behaviour is grounded in social psychology, etc.) You will also find Desautels to be a more international and culturally diverse faculty than Arts. Lastly, if you manage to learn enough French in your first few years to follow along in a course (challenging, but possible if you take lots of language courses and seek out opportunities for immersion like volunteering in a mostly French-speaking organization)... There is a Bureau de coopération interuniversitaire that grants students permission to take courses at other institutions at no additional cost.  So, if you wanted, you could take French-language courses in your major or an elective at HEC Montreal/UdeM or UQAM.

I took my first degree in law at McGill and I am now pursuing a PhD at UCL. Both Montreal and London are really good places to be a students and will expose you to many different experiences and opportunities. Indeed, a recent study conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit and sponsored by the China Bank of Communication found that Montreal is the top city to study abroad while London is the second (http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealtime/2013/07/12/bocom-taps-turtles-to-keep-customers/.) Moreover, both schools are amazing. McGill is undoubtedly the top school in Montreal while UCL is at the top for some programmes and close to the top for many, many others. I really can't say more as I don't know exactly which programme you would choose. An important difference between London and Montreal to consider is the cost of your studies and the cost of living in each city. Montreal will be considerably cheaper than London, so its strength lies in the fact that it offers formidable value for money. On the other hand, London is a truly global city and is likely to be an excellent springboard for your career. However, it is also one of the most expensive city in the world and some of what it has to offer might not be within your reach (it certainly is the case for me). Hope this helps!
