What does it take to be a GREAT programmer?

What does it take to be a game programmer?

  • I love games! You can say I live games! I like coding and I always thought of being a game programmer. Well I'm quite confused between a game dev and game designer. I hate drawing. I am an Indian. I am not a college student yet. I always wanted to do MS at Stanford.. Ok so thats a different story. So what is the future of a game programmer? Will I be payed good? I want to work with Ubisoft, bungie and the likes. And what is a life of a game programmer? And will a 4 year BE degree in CS be enough? Thanks!

  • Answer:

A game dev is a programmer. A game designer specifies the game systems and features that will be needed. Designers work with the coders and they also work with the artists and spend a good amount of time with the producers. If you like coding, the easiest way into the games industry is going to be as a programmer. A 4 year CS degree is sufficient.

Nice to see more guys aspiring to become game programmer nowadays. I am just like you. Except that I graduated from college last year. And happily a iOS game programmer now. If you are like me wanting to work on console games with world class developers like Rockstar or Ubisoft, you are slightly have a disadvantage. You are in the wrong the place! Sorry to say that but that's the ugly truth ! In India, the gaming market is hugely towards mobile. Every other gaming company you look for, starting from the biggies like EA to small startups(trust me I have been in both places), every single company out there is towards mobile. ( Just search for careers in gaming, you would know )Although its still fun playing games on devices, the console gaming experience can never be matched. So is the development. I am still dying to get my hands on console development. Even I wanted to be a creative designer when I started pursuing games. But I suck at drawing. But now I could say programming is extremely satisfying thing to do (If you get really passionate ) If you have done your schooling, now is the right time to take a decision. Game programming is also demanding but an extremely satisfying job if you have that passion. You have to struggle  during the initial days, but once you have taken off, you would never regret your decision. The pay is definitely above average to great if you have the right skills ( c++ !)Atleast its a hella lot better than what an average IT company would offer. So this is what I would advice you: If you want to kick start your career in gaming with a good launch pad, go for an exclusive course on game development. I would recommend you to look on supinfo, pune( a bit expensive, but really worth it !). Or if you feel insecure, do a 4 year degree and work on game programming during you free time and then make a step. I would recommend you the former, because I still regret for not making that decision 5 years ago. It really makes a huge difference ! Make a wise choice, and you would never regret ! Cheerio !
