In what universities to study accounting and finance?

What university in the UK should I choose to study accounting and finance as an undergrad? Why?

  • Hey guys! I really require your help regarding this issue as it is really confusing. I currently live in India and graduated from high school a month back. I aspire to become an entrepreneur in the field of computer software. Technology has always interested me. I developed two games for the iOS when I was 14. Right now, I am working on a web development project for my startup company. I wish to pursue my higher education overseas as I believe in exploring the various opportunities available abroad. However, I am stuck in a dilemma. I got acceptance from three universities: Sheffield, Kent and Strathclyde for Accounting and Finance. Which university according to you would fit my entrepreneurial mind and provide me with the best knowledge and oppurtunities possible? Besides considering these crucial factors, I also want to attend a university that has welcoming students. I do not want to affect my social life. I want that the university should have loads of activities such as clubs, restaurants, adventure sports and other places for an eighteen year old boy to discover. Your help would be really appreciated :)

  • Answer:

From my limited knowledge of these universities I reckon Sheffield would be the best. However, you should really visit if you can, and take a look at their course materials. Also look at which universities are most likely to encourage entrepreneurship. Some will have clubs and societies that are relevant. Also think about where you'd be living while there, you want somewhere with a lot of business to get the most experience. Don't take my word for it, or anyone else's, take a look for yourself.

Caveat: As a graduate of Strathclyde I'm obviously a little biased, and I have no experience of the other Universities, so I can't make a comparison.... Strathclyde is top rated for entrepreneurship and business in general, as well as the speciality you are looking at. I think that matters a lot. Universities have so many different subjects on offer, and they can't be good at all of them, so quality and reputation in your field of interest matters. The Scottish 4 year degrees will also give you the chance to try out other subjects and take classes you may not be able to in a traditional 3 year English undergrad programme. Glasgow is a cool city with renowned nightlife, culture, eating and drinking. When you're nursing a hangover you'll also benefit from being on the edge of some spectacular countryside... outdoor activites: check! Glasgow folk are notoriously friendly, and the Scots in general too. The Strathclyde campus is right in the heart of the city, so it would feel very different to the small town/rural feeling of somewhere like Kent. In the end though, I think you'll be happy with whatever choice you make... just make the most of every opportunity you get! Trust your gut!

I can't really comment on Sheffield or Kent but I can recommend Strathclyde as a Uni. I'm not sure what the Accounting/Finance degrees are like but Strathclyde has a strong focus on Engineering so as an "entrepreneur" you would be in good company. Also the Uni is positioned right in the middle of Glasgow, which is a fantastic city and certainly would provide you with active social life.

Thank you for the A2A. If you must, then I think you should choose Sheffield. It's relatively more reputed, and from what I know, has good entrepreneurial opportunities. Do take a look at the university, and talk to its alumni and the students studying there. It will give you a better idea.
