What is the difference between My Web and del.icio.us?

What is the difference between web 1.0 and web 2.0?

  • Tim Berners Lee  talks about Web 2.0 and says, "Web 1.0 was all about connecting people. It was an interactive space, and I think Web 2.0 is of course a piece of jargon, nobody even knows what it means." Do you agree with this? Or, you really see a difference between both?

  • Answer:

Oh come on, Web 2.0 has multiple meanings. Some view it as post-2000 market crash. But I think most view it as a site building methodology which is database driven using a Content Managment System, Templates and Style Sheets vs hand coding. It can get way more complicated than that, but i think that's a good short answer. Berners-Lee is a god to all of us who have worked in developing this web communications tool and platform of communication. But it's fairly common when inventors of hugely significant phenomena drop out of its daily goings on, and thus it's very easy to dismiss out of hand "jargon" than actually has been applied to a set of practices that can be clustered, identified, and defined.

I agree the term is somewhat ambigious.  There appear to be two dominant interpretations.  Some people define "Web 2.0" as a hybridization of graphical design and content.  Any well designed graphical web site would meet this definition.  There's a few examples on this web page: http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/09/25-examples-of-web-2-0-and-traditional-design-rules-coming-together/ Other people define "Web 2.0" as specifically about dynamic client-side web technologies, such as AJAX and Flash.  Quora is itself an excellent example of Web 2.0 in this sense, because the Quora page is filled with dynamic content and AJAX. Other examples include Gmail, Facebook, and Twitter.  Virtually any web page with complex client-side behavior would be described as Web 2.0. Web 1.0 is more document centric.  Web 1.0 pages were basically documents with links in them.  For example, my personal home page is Web 1.0.
