I'm not a native English speaker, but my English is fluent. Will I have any chance of getting a teaching job in Thailand if I get a TESOL certificate?
-
I'm from Russia and I'm not a native English speaker. Nevertheless, my English is fluent and I'd like to get a TESOL in Thailand. I've heard that being a native or near-native English speaker is a mandatory requirement for teaching English in Thailand. Is it true? So.. does that mean that even if I get a TESOL, I will not have any chance to get a teaching job in Thailand?

Answer:
It's definitely possible to teach in Thailand, even if you're not a native English speaker. I've met Japanese, Filipinos and Germans teaching here, and some of them speak far-from-fluent English. You may need to be a native speaker for some of the highest-paid jobs (Wall Street Institute perhaps) but if you can prove that you speak well I think you won't have much trouble.

Although I can't speak to Thailand specifically, I worked as a TESOL teacher in Shanghai for a few years. In short, you probably won't have much trouble, although you might need to settle a little bit (take a job in the suburbs, slightly lower pay, etc.) For what its worth, people are not actually concerned so much with the quality of the instruction, but with the appearance of having a "foreign-looking" teacher. And the most desirable foreign appearance is fair skin, fair hair, and blue eyes. The end result of this is that its often easier for Germans, Russians, and Swedes to get jobs as English teachers than it is for Asian-Americans or African-Americans. With that said, the standards might be a bit higher in Thailand, simply due to supply and demand. Until very recently, not many Americans or Europeans wanted to live in China, whereas the draw of Thailand is more obvious.
