What book would you recommend for Graphic Design?

Can you recommend a good book on design?

  • I'm mostly interested in web design, typography and color theory. Something not TOO basic, but also something pretty comprehensive.

Smashing Magazine's Library is a nice comprehensive list of all things design that should be great for learning too (http://www.smashingmagazine.com/ebooks/). If you are serious about learning design, I would recommend our UX/UI design bootcamp at Bloc (http://www.bloc.io/design). We offer one-on-one mentorship with experienced, professional designers. You meet with them to review projects you will be working on that allow you to explore real-world challenges and hone your craft.

I personally use instructional manuals when it comes to design. Information that can help me execute the design in whatever platform Im using. But when comes to typography, color theory, and web design, nothing hold more value to me than to keep to cardinal rules Ive set for myself. A basic clean design creates a strong impact. Less is more. And as for color...go to town. Color is everywhere and a basic knowledge of primary and neutral colors will provide to anchor to the color scheme you are working with. Rember your design is your design. You're introducing a work of art for the first time. Be original simple, tasteful and colorful.
