What is marketing and its roles?

What does Google look for in filling Product Manager / Product Marketing type roles?

  • I'm especially interested in knowing about Product Manager / Product Marketing type roles. In terms of the skills/fit they look for in employees in general, rather than any specific programming expertise.

  • Answer:

As mentioned, these are two very different roles. When I was there, to be a PM you almost always had to have a technical background -- they eliminated Business PMs at least five years ago (I'm assuming they haven't brught them back). PMs typically had experience managing people at Google or came in from an acquisition where they were previously running a team and product. has a great post on what he looks for in a PM, and while he's speaking for himself and not Google as a whole, I'd venture a guess that there are a lot of similarities: https://www.kennethnorton.com/essays/productmanager.html. To be a PMM, you typically don't need nearly as extensive technical chops. Generally you're less in charge of product direction as much as you're in charge of product framing and positioning (ie marketing). As mentioned, they're pretty different roles.
