    I procrastinated until the last minute and had a limited budget, so I was really in trouble. I used this company: http://www.economovejapan.com/htm/self_pack.html It took about 1.5 months by ferry for 1 cubic meter of stuff, and I saved a few hundred bucks by completing the customs forms and picking the boxes up from the port in Oakland by myself ("door-to-port" service). IIRC I paid a little over $1,000 all-in, which is pretty cheap compared to the big names.
