How do e-commerce sites like PosterGully! Buy Posters Online India or AllPosters.com - The World's Largest Poster and Print Store! get the rights to the movie/tv series/sports/celebrity merchandise they sell?

    I am in the poster business myself as Co-Founder of http://Carmocrat.com. There are 2 main agencies based in the UK - Pyramid Posters (http://www.pyramidinternational.com/) and GB Eye (http://www.gbeye.com/). These agencies tie up with film and TV studios, music bands, sports stars, football clubs, comics and gaming companies. Pyramid and GB Eye essentially license a wide range of content from various sources (eg: Fox Studios, Warner Brothers, DC Comics, Manchester United, Miramax etc) and then distribute these posters worldwide through an extensive network of distributors. These distributors in turn offer licensed posters to individual retailers (like Camocrat) which we then retail on our platform.  In essence, these companies (online retailers like AllPosters) do not directly negotiate licenses and royalty payments from the copyright owners; instead opting to deal with agencies which buy the rights for such content. All these posters will have copyright watermarks at the bottom, which signify their authenticity. Few of our competitors do indulge in directly printing images from the internet and retailing them - a direct violation of copyright law. Such posters will ALWAYS be 12 x 18 inches in size (easily printed on a digital printer) and will NOT have any copyright watermark at the bottom.

They wont be using the official names/ trademarked names on their products. For example: If they are selling a Manchester United poster, they can use the word 'The Red Devils' on the products and it still will be cool! and more importantly not a copyright violation.
