Is search engine marketing the same as search engine advertising?

  • I often see job descriptions that say that you must have knowledge about Search engine marketing (SEM) and search engine advertising (SEA) but are they not the same thing?

    They are essentially the same thing - paying to increase website visibility in the search engine results pages. As Jonathan stated above, they are in essence the same thing. SEM would usually incorporate the paid initiatives that are taken to showcase your website (PPC most notably) and therefore it would be considered advertising. SEO however would be a totally different ball game.
