What's the best way to contact a potential business partner who suggested a follow-up meeting but isn't responding my emails or voice mails?
-
Once or twice a year I'll have a good, positive exchange with someone but then have my subsequent emails or voice mails go ignored. What's the best way (i.e., polite and professional) to follow up a conversation that ended with "Let's talk more" but where the other party has gone silent?

Answer:
Back off exponentially and try to re-engage them socially. Invite them to a low key social activity in a couple weeks with a small group, ideally other folks from your niche. Something like drinks, bowling, frisbee, sailing, golf, and etc. If they don't respond, try again in a couple months. Check in occasionally when there is a conference you might both be at, see if they are free to meet for lunch or for just a few minutes in the hallway between sessions. People are one of my favorite parts of business, along with strategy and code, and it is fun to see what they do next. Or where they think money is. I would absolutely never say "You told me you wanted to talk more, am I wasting my time?" Some people are just really busy. Or have second thoughts about your idea, or you. The solution to both situations is to just get to know them better, so you can talk more directly, and to keep in touch for when your situations might change.

I usually see two options in this situation: 1. Letting it go 2. Being blunt ("you told me that you wanted to talk more, is this still the case or am I wasting my time?"). I would do this via email. Option 2 is scary at first but more often then not it works for me.

Not the best advice but I suggest letting it go. Often people are too scared to tell someone to their face they don't want to do business and ignoring messages is a good way to get around this. A childish attitude but all sorts of people use it.
