How do you use wildcards in search?

Considering how voice search technology bypasses search engine result pages, what are alternative ways besides analytics that companies like Google can still use to monetize search ads?

  • Assuming the voice search will be popular faster than many expected and given how much of Google's revenue is tied to search ads, how will future development in voice search technology by Apple or even Google  changes the financial aspects of search monetization? With voice search, queries are  directly tied to a landing page hence bypassing the biggest money making opportunity for companies like Google that are making money from search ads.

  • Answer:

For some verticals, voice search (and other app) providers could offer users the choice to speak with a live agent/professional, and then monetize the call transfer (and other related data exchange).  Scenario: User is driving to work. She hears a news brief about lower mortgage rates.  "Siri, what are the lowest mortgage rates in my area?"  (stuff happens)  User receives multiple options including one to speak with a loan specialist in her area. If the user has already opted in to share her credit score and other personal info to hear the most accurate rates, and also gives Siri permission to send the loan specialist those data to expedite the loan application process, the lender may pay between $50-$250* for the privilege of taking the call. In addition to financial services and other service-related verticals I imagine there will be many other voice search monetizable verticals.  i.e. "Love that song you just asked the free version of Spotify to play in your car? Well there's a ringtone for that. And if you buy now for $.99 we'll even throw in two two more ringtones, for FREE!" While sponsored links in SERPs aren't going anywhere anytime soon, there will most certainly be a number of scenarios in which users never see SERPs for their queries.  And for those scenarios I believe (and hope) platforms will emerge that make it easy for users to quickly get what they want, including access to paid products/services, when appropriate. *very broad range and a guesstimate.  Could be more or less, depending on a variety of factors..

I dont think conversational search and search ads are mutually exclusive. Looking at the how it is being used today, in siri, google now or cortana, it is mainly a complement to the main serp. As of now for example, google now or cortana provide an answer to many conversational queries ( such as: is it raining tomorrow) but the answer is added to the top of serp not replacing it. This diesn't mean however, that such a scenario is not possible. For a query like { what time is it in Beijing} you can just provide an answer or speak back to the user. Monetization in such scenarios will be new.

I don't think that voice search implies bypassing the search engine result page. People read a lot faster than anyone can speak, so in many cases, it's much more efficient to read/skim through the results than to listen to them. And if a user is reading, there's room for an ad or two. Even if the voice is reading the result, you can still stick in an ad. For many mobile searches -- those for a local place to buy coffee or gas or whatever -- you can directly monetize the search by adding in news of a promotion.
