How should prospective graduate students interested in computer science or computer engineering do to prepare for graduate school?
-
I have decided to apply to graduate school this fall after about gaining two years worth of working experience. How should prospective graduate students interested in pursuing their master's degrees in computer science prepare for graduate school in terms of retaking introductory math and computer classes, finding the right program to apply, finding the right professor and academic team to collaborate with once accepted to graduate school, etc. How should I approach researching the best graduate school programs for my needs? Should I read publications of current students and professors of programs that I am interested in applying to? How can I approach graduate school research online and offline in the best possible way? I want to make sure that I will make the right decisions for my future, especially as someone who did not graduate with a B.S in engineering, math, or C.S. I have a B.A in Sociology, but I am passionate about technology and will work harder to get a CS master's degree. Graduate school will be an investment and life-changing experience for me.

Answer:
In general, you need to be ready to take the back subjects since you didn't take a related undergraduate field. In particular, I suggest you sit in some of the prerequisite math and programming subjects to get a feel of it. Alternatively, you might want to take a Master program in IT instead of a regular CS Masters to gradually move into the field. This affects your selection criteria for institutions since these programs are less research oriented. So you select one based on factors such as reputation of program and logistical convenience. If you do want to take a regular CS graduate program then you should be prepared to do research. Therefore, you need to select institutions based on their research agenda. Check out the answer:
