Why and when did reCAPTCHA stop using real words in its CAPTCHAs?

  • All the ones I see now are nonsense words.  Did they run out of real words or did using real words make it too much easier to OCR things?

    As far as I know, innovation was to mix normal CAPTCHAs with words considered difficult to OCRize. It is possible that nonsense words fall into the second category (and the fact that they have no sense can lead to the fact they are considered to have a bad score in the primary process).

If I had to stake a claim, I would most likely say the the reason for reCAPTCHA using fake words is due because of bots able to run through a whole dictionary and brute force their way in, which wouldn't take a problem long at all for every word. So using fake words and of course staying with the tilted and skewed format are ways to prevent a program from being able to spam forums or other sites where you can try if you mess up over and over. Yes reCAPTCHA is a total pain in the ass, but it does clean at least somewhat of the the internet up.
