Universities for Graphic Design/ Visual Communication?

How is graphic design different from visual communication?

  • Are graphic design and visual communicate two different things? If so, what are the practical definitions of each one of them?

  • Answer:

Graphic design is a subset within visual communication. Graphic design is, at its core, all about solving problems through visual means. Many areas of creative expression (for example, painting or dance) could be called visual communication, but wouldn't be considered graphic design. It's also worth noting that for some people, the title 'graphic design' implies designing mostly for print, as opposed to a 'web designer' or just a 'designer.'

Graphic Design is a broad term we have traditionally used to describe our profession, and Visual Communication describes what we do or study. That is, we help our clients communicate visually... in ways that express and enhance the desired message, regardless of the medium used.

Maybe think of visual design as the 'Programme' and graphic design as a 'project' - to put it in digital pm parlance..
