What design aspects would reduce the amount of energy a LCD monitor consumes when displaying a web site?

    The vast majority of energy an LCD consumes is to power its backlight.  The reason an LCD does not save power with a dark screen, is the backlight is always at the same level, and black pixels just block that backlight. Because of this it is a hardware, not a software problem.  I don't think websites have the access to ever adjust screen brightness.  There is really no way to significantly reduce power from a website coding perspective. There are screens that could display websites using very little energy.  E-ink screens and the pixel qi transflective screen are two examples of energy sipping screens capable of displaying a webpage.
