What are plug-ins and are they free?

To what extent do WordPress.org sites get slowed down by number of plugins?

  • I have 15 active plugins for example. If these are all coded perfectly, no bugs, etc. Could these, or could downloading more plugins, slow down site loading time? And do plugins that only affect the backend (Dashboard, etc.) slowdown frontend load speeds?

  • Answer:

More plugins could slow the site down, but more plugins could improve speed also. If you are really concerned about speed, add all the plugins you want then add WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache. Your site will probably be faster than without it. Some plugins are backend only but most affect the normal view of your site. What ive noticed is that some frameworks affect the site performance way more than 20+ plugins. I wont mention names to protect the guilty. But again cache plugins mitigate that downside. Aloha!

Plugins need to request information. The more plugins you have, the more requests are needed to load a page, so it will load slower. Having said that, some plugins request information from the sites database which tend to be faster than plugins that request information from external sources and then you are at the mercy of those servers speed. There are a variety of Wordpress plugins that can examine your site and test which plugins are using your resources and slowing your site down.
