What should one do if he/she doesn't like his/her job: find ways to make it more interesting, or find their true interest and get a job in that field?

I am a software engineer at one of the world's biggest software firms. This is my first job and I've been working here for around a year now. I don't much like my job mostly because of the work stress and the monotony of the work, but the pay is good. I know this is not the job I would like to do my whole life. What should I do? Should I start looking for my true interest (which I don't know yet), or find ways to make my current job more interesting?

Thanks for the A2A. There is something you need to do. First of all, you need to find your interest. What activity, what type of work could possibly have you hooked, i.e. you could do that all day long and not get bored of it? Something which gives you thrills, which you want to do yourself. Once you've found your interest, you now have two things in front of you - your job which pays good, versus your interest, following which might be risky. Obviously, your current job is not your interest. Otherwise, there wouldn't have been this question in the first place. People would tell you you should take risks. Follow your dream. But, to me, that sounds awfully risky. I mean, life's not fair now, is it? What I'd suggest is that you gather some resources for future. Near or distant, depends on your capability of gathering the resources. Secure yourself first. And then, choose to follow your dreams. Do not remain stuck in the rut of your monotonous job if you don't like it. But, do not dive into the world with empty hands. Gather money to help you move towards your interests, and also, some money as a reserve. Till then, handle your job. Make your job creative. Don't do the same thing again and again. Bring a change in it. This change, in turn, depends on the type of your job. You can easily find numerous ways to make your job interesting, if you search for it on the internet. There is only one way to break from monotony, and that is change. You need to change something - to make yourself feel fresh. Just remember to think rationally. Passion is a good thing, but it becomes more valuable in the presence of good judgement. I hope this helps. All the best!
