Why should use the search engine?

Why doesn't Google Chrome use the Google Search Engine spellchecker?

  • Google Search has a fantastic spellchecker because it's based on actual usage. Google Chrome appears to have the same fixed spellchecker every other piece of software has. Why doesn't Google Chrome use the Google Search spellchecker?

  • Answer:

Because the Google search spellchecker runs in their data centers, while the Chrome spellchecker runs on your local machine. Sending everything you type in to your browser to Google's servers just to check spelling would be an unnecessary privacy violation, especially since local spell checking does a good-enough job.

It can (now) if you enable "Use a web service to help resolve spelling errors" in advanced options (or "Ask Google for suggestions" in the spell checker context menu item). It's not on by default because it needs to send what you type to Google servers.
