Answer:
This article recently came up in Business Insider. It talks about choosing your booking location as something different from what you are currently based out of. Though I havent tried it myself, I think it's worth a shot! http://www.businessinsider.com/use-a-fake-location-for-cheap-airfare-2014-6?IR=T Thanks for A2A btw!

Well first you have the basics:-Start searching for flights at least 6 months in advance. Don't necessarily book that early though, some airlines don't release space until later.-Fly from nearby bigger airports instead of closer smaller ones. I live in San Jose (SJC). But if I'm flying internationally, I can get cheaper prices with less stops from flying out of San Francisco (SFO).-Regularly check on the prices in all the major travel search engines. You should at least have a tab open for: http://Kayak.com, http://expedia.com, http://orbitz.com, http://cheapoair.com, http://skyscanner.com, http://flights.google.com, http://vayama.com etc. The more you search the better.-Set a flight alert (I like the ones on Kayak and Skyscanner) to email or text you when the price goes down. Now if you want even better deals, you have to be willing to be flexible:-If you don't mind travelling on alternate travel dates: Use http://adisoso.com or thehttp://matrix.itasoftware.com/. Put in the range of dates that you are willing to fly, and let them find you the cheapest prices for them. Your wallet will be rewarded for your flexibility. -If you don't mind flying with a bunch of layovers: Search for flights to cities in the same area. For example, some of the cheapest flight searches from San Francisco to Europe, are to Dublin or Moscow. So if I wanted to go to London, it might be cheaper to search for flights from SF to Dublin and then Dublin to London separately. http://cleverlayover.cpomis a great tool that automatically does this for you (but only for a couple destinations right now). If you want to manually find the cheapest city in the region to fly to, use Google's Flight Search "https://www.google.com/flights/#search;f=SFO;t=r-Europe-0x46ed8886cfadda85%253A0x72ef99e6b3fcf079;d=2016-01-30;r=2016-02-03;mc=m" Function. Only problem is that you may need to go through customs in whatever country you are layovering in, since both of your flights wouldn't be on the same ticket.-If you don't mind flying with low-cost airlines: Try flying with http://www.norwegian.com/us, http://wowair.us/ and http://www.icelandair.com/Pros: Prices can be as low as $200-$300 US to Europe roundtrip. Cons: You might have to pay extra if you want meals or check-in luggage. Also, unless you want to go to Iceland, Norway or Sweden, (Norwegian has some flights to London) you'll probably need to book another flight to your final destination.

Very short answer but it really is as simple as looking on http://www.skyscanner.netThat will find you the best deals across nearly every major airline. The only way you will find better deals is if you are a frequent flyer with redeemable points, for which you will probably need to log into the airlines website who you have the points with, or call them. If you are travelling in a group a good travel agent may be able to get you better deals than an individual could, but you may be surprised what deals an airline will give you if you book in advance for a large group of people. For an individual without points to redeem though, the sky scanner link is as good as it gets.

If you can be flexible, I'd recommend looking in cities close to your preferred destination. Often you can find a plane/train combo that's cheaper than flying direct - especially in Europe.Once you decide on a specific flight, the best way to ensure you get the best price is to use a travel service or travel club that guarantees that if the price drops any time you you can benefit fro the change. This is very beneficial as you no longer need o try to "get the timing right", which is really just a guess anyway.I'd be happy to help you find one of these services as I use a couple of them currently.

The first thing you need to know is what the cheapest fare is. Websites will show you what the cheapest available fare is for the parameters you input. There may be a cheaper fare that is sold out and the web wonât tell you that. So, get on the phone. The person who answers, just like the web, will try and sell you the cheapest available fare. Push and ask what the actual cheapest fare is. For instance, British Airways advertised a fare London/Amsterdam/London âfrom £28 returnâ. I couldnât find that fare available for sale. I phoned and, eventually, the person I was talking to put me through to a âspecialâ department and I discovered that this cheap fare was only from Gatwick, on one flight per week, coming back to Gatwick on a different day.Once you know the cheapest fare, and what the rules associated with it are, you can search properly.Just one problem. Some airlines, on some routes, use agents known as âconsolidatorsâ. Sometimes they are based on ethnicity; if you want a cheap fare from London to Korea thereâs a suburb in London where all the Korean consolidators can be found. Thatâs only local knowledge and youâll have to try and find it where you live. Of course, it may not exist; just because lots of French people live in a London suburb wonât mean thatâs a good place to find consolidators offering cheap tickets London/Paris - it usually only applies to long haul flights.

Depending where you are flying to and from, there could be airlines not included in the popular cheap flights sites. Also, the cheapest flights may sometimes be the least convenient. Long layovers, multi airport, and so on.I finally gave up looking for the cheapest, and now that I can afford it, I book the most convenient, with the best layovers. My next trip from Asia to the US and Canada is with Turkish Airlines. The layover is in one of the best airports in the world, and the baggage allowance is 46 kgs each!

I use skyscanner. It finds flights cheaper than via a travel agent. And my friend is a travel agent! Also be flexible with travel dates. Often leaving a day early or later can save you moneyOh and use private browsing as cookies showing you are hunting down flights means prices are higher.

Are you originating in the US or Europe? I would search European Airlines. I find some of the lesser known airlines (like Turkish Air) have great international round trip fares.
