Is alexa rank a good indicator of traffic to the web site?
-
Is the alexa rank a good indicator of the sites popularity or in other words how much traffic the site is getting ? So, a low alexa rank number means higher traffic and a high means low traffic ? If alexa rank is not a good indicator, then what is ? Is there another credible metric or there is none ?

Answer:
To some extent it depends upon the sites you are analyzing. Alexa obtains it's rankings from users of the Alexa toolbar, which is a fairly limited sample. But if you're looking at very popular consumer sites, it's probably not a bad place to start. If, however, you are trying to analyse a site with less traffic (and this can still include significant websites), then it can be extremely inaccurate. There's a great article about the limitations of Alexa written by a publication for electronics engineers - http://www.eejournal.com/media-kit/advertising/insider-archives/20140203-alexa/. One alternative to Alexa is Quantcast. Some sites use their tool, so the results for those sites are very accurate, but it also struggles to get traffic estimates with any accuracy for smaller website.

https://moz.com/blog/testing-accuracy-visitor-data-alexa-compete-google-trends-quantcast Yes Alexa is a good indicator of traffic to a website. The ranking is based on the Amount of traffic recorded by users over the period of three months. Generally the lower the rank, the more popular the website. However The traffic estimated by Alexa is not 100% accurate. If you want to view your traffic the best place to see is "https://www.google.co.in/analytics/" It provides the exact traffic and it is most widely used web analysis service on the internet. Well, here (http://netberry.co.uk/alexa-rank-explained.htm) is described a way to make a traffic estimation based on the alexa rank. Basically, the author has offered an exponential function, not linear or polynomial. There is also a web service which aggregated alexa ranks + real data and made the calculations: http://www.alexarank2traffic.com/ I checked it, and for 80% of the websites the results are very satisfying. Still, there is 20% of (possibly, manipulated by webmasters) incorrect data (the estimated traffic is much higher than in reality)
