How do I catch up in math classes?

Is it possible to get into a decent grad school for a Master's in data science without having taken math classes in my undergrad, using open access resources such as MOOCs to catch up on prerequisites?

  • Answer:

I would say top programs will hesitate in chosing you since the competition is tough and u will be competing with guys who have strong math background. However if u can prove ur quant skills through some other means like the GRE or the subject test you may make up for it.

Sure. Some background in maths definitely helps but a lot of courses do not specify that as a mandatory requirement. The reason for that is, although there is math involved, you do not have to be a math geek. If you take some basic classes covering linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics, it will take you pretty far. Obviously, you will need to put in extra effort to catch up on these topics. Also, if you are going to a program which is offered under CS dept, its helpful to brush up on your algorithms and CS concepts. All the best.
