What should I expect in my Marketing position Interview?

Google: how to get an interview for marketing position? Or is it just impossible?

  • I am looking to just get an interview. I always thought I at least have some of the things Google look for- 99th percentile ( and almost perfect) scores in GRE and GMAT ( Google asks for those in the application form);recent  MBA from Top 10 or 5 or 1 school (depends on which MBA ranking you trust); small but impactful social media marketing and online retailing experience ( but in consumer products industry), and also have both consulting (tier 2 firm) and brand marketing experience. I applied for all the relevant product marketing manager positions but never received an interview call.  What am I doing wrong? What is the right way to approach?

  • Answer:

The best way is to go through someone who works there. Google receives so many applications - having a friend submit your resume directly into their system makes a huge difference.

I have a friend who applied to Google using the web interface (he is an expert in C/C++). No response. I have a friend who works at Google, I asked her to recommend my friend to Google HR and forward the resume to them. Google got on to it quite fast. My friend is now interviewing with them and things seem to move pretty fast (especially that my friend has another offer on the pipe from a well known company). So, yes, the key is to have an insider recommend you.

You should be going (or should have gone) to your MBA school's career fair and applying through them. Those resumes are prioritized for interviews.

Why do you want to work there?  If you are a marketer, you want to work your craft in a company that focuses on marketing.  Google spends very little on its marketing relative to other companies, and it's not an area of excellence for them.  Engineers really drive the ship.  At Google, if you have no engineering background, even for marketing, it's going to be tough to get in. I strongly suggest you expand your consideration set to Amazon, eBay, even Facebook and Twitter.
