Are S'porean having enough or for MORE to COME?

Why do people come up with horror stories and invent new monstrous creatures? Isn't reality scary enough, don't we have enough terror already?

  • And if it's a depiction mechanism, why do some other people like watching such stuff? Where's the motivation for them to come up with such stuff, and the motivation to watch/read these things, is it because they're bored with the regular earthly evils?  I'm not saying it's wrong or right, I just want to know why.

    Imaginary and fictional stories/monsters/characters are easier and less stressful than dealing with the real mess that's going on in the world. It's a stress reliever and a black and white bad guy instead of the usual shades of gray that make up the good and bad of the world.

I think it is basically a form of escapism from reality. To really enjoy a scary situation, we have to know we’re in a safe environment. It’s all about triggering the amazing fight-or-flight response to experience the flood of adrenaline, endorphins, and dopamine, but in a completely safe space. I don't think there would be any enjoyment in a real life situation. Also I think it is a male thing. Men enjoy horror stories more than women.

I think it's a similar reason to why people like riding roller coasters or sky diving: adrenaline. Fear is a very primitive emotion that some people like to indulge in a safe environment (or at least relatively safe in the case of sky diving/bungee jumping). A person being chased by some scary thing is a very universal feeling that we can all relate to on some level. So when we see it in a movie it gets our heart pumping, it makes us feel alive. Also, as someone who enjoys horror movies, I find the monsters fascinating, especially ones created WITHOUT CGI. To me it's another form of creativity.
