What is Sports Marketing or Sports Management?

Is it a good idea to wear sports coat for an interview in the SF bay area for a marketing/product management role in a web company?

  • Does it look like trying too hard? Is going with a shirt (of course pants:) the best option?

  • Answer:

If you wear a suit and tie lawyer uniform, that's a sure sign that you didn't bother to learn about the locally prevalent corporate culture. That kind of dress is considered a symbol of the overly tradition-bound and hierarchical corporate cultures that Silicon Valley likes to distinguish itself from. Short of that, though, no dress code means exactly that: no dress code. There exists no iron law of jeans and t-shirts that says that you shall not get hired if you show up wearing, say, khakis, a casual button-down and a corduroy blazer.

Rule of thumb for job interviews: overdress for the first interview, observe how other people dress, and then dress that way from the second interview onwards. Safer to be overdressed than underdressed for job interviews.
