How can we get the bitcoin and crypto community to stop referring to 'Crypto Currency' and instead start using the term 'Digital Cash'?

We are at the exact moment in time when most technologies fail. This moment is referred to as 'Crossing the Chasm' For more details: http://platformsandnetworks.blogspot.com/2011/07/business-model-analysis-part-8-crossing.html We need to go from early adopters like us who like to play with shiny new toys --> to the early majority that are pragmatists that only adopt product with proven benefits and minimal risks. One of the main factors that is slowing us down from crossing the chasm is our marketing. "Crypto Currency' a) sounds scary as hell b) sounds confusing as hell c) does nothing to explain the benefits provided or problems solved "Digital Cash" on the other hand a) sounds familiar b) sounds understandable c) illustrates the main early benefits of crypto currencies: near zero transaction costs instantaneous borderless irreversible I'd like to push for a community wide shift to 'Digital Cash'. One of my first orders of business it to use this framing in a bitcoin business school case I am co-authoring as well as on my bitcoin education blog (http://www.BitcoinCollege.info). But I fear the trickle down time on both those efforts is lengthy. Any suggestions on how to quickly push 'Digital Cash' terminology community wide?

Answer:
This is the first time I've heard someone push for the term "digital cash". In fact, I don't think I've heard anyone be particularly disgruntled with the term cryptocurrency until this question. You raise some interesting points, but I don't see how you can make the change when people in general don't seem to have a problem with the term already in place.

you don't a term is in wide use it is pointless to change it unless you redefine the game... for example in cloud computing we disagree with the current definition (far too limiting) but are stuck with it

There are a few problems.... 1) the term "digital cash" can be used for a wide variety of payment systems which aren't related to bitcoin 2) some of us don't *want* bitcoin to be "end user friendly." As long as bitcoin is marketed as something dangerous that only experts should touch, we will get a free pass from the regulators (at least in China and HK) to experiment with bitcoin. The moment bitcoin becomes something that everyone can use, we are looking at a lot more regulatory headaches.

"Cryptocurrency" might not be ideal but "digital cash" seems extremely vague and even less descriptive. It is even slightly misleading, since bitcoin doesn't have (yet) all the properties of cash. While it can very successfully replace cash in some cases it would be bad to have people think they can use it exactly in the same way they use cash. I don't want to offend you, but that just seems like marketing and forging buzzwords to me. If you want people to use bitcoin, explain them what it is instead of trying to make them believe it is what it is not.

we prefer the term 'digital assets' - representing the new emerging asset class of currencies, derivatives and other digital value tokens - see http://www.datauthority.org

Well if you are not going to use the term cryptocurrency, then why not use a term that actually explains that it is decentralized? But the big problem might be that we do not got a term for "decentralized opensource cryptocurrency", so why not invent a new terrm instead?
