How Can I Get Started As A Freelance Web Developer?

Where do I get started as an amateur web developer?

  • I downloaded Visual Basic, Visual Web Developer and WebMatrix combined with Joomla, and each of those came with a dozen other programs. Which one should I use?  I am a beginner.  I know nothing.

  • Answer:

Are you familiar with HTML? If not, this is your first step. After that, learn CSS to a T. Those two are the basic building blocks of any site and can make awesomeness without any images or server-side programming. It really depends on what you wish to accomplish. Do you have a project in mind? If so, it comes down to that. In general, when you're just starting out in the field, HTML and CSS are basic requirements and a definite necessity for any web development. It helps to know PHP also as most content management systems(such as Joomla) run PHP so it would be useful to be able to make edits where you find it necessary.

As a web developer don't use any of those unless you're confortable with them. HTML and CSS, as Michelangelo Johnson said, is the basis of the web and those languages you can even code on the notepad /textedit. There are a lot software that helps you to code this. I use Coda, a mac software which I really love, the most used is Dreamweaver from Adobe (a really good software) and then for pc you still have things like Notepad++. Follow at least these two websites: http://net.tutsplus.com/ http://webdesign.tutsplus.com/ They may be kind of advanced but this way you start to see some advanced articles. Try to get the http://Lynda.com about HTML, CSS and Dreamweaver. The tutorials are well structured and you'll learn a lot!

I was kind of hoping visual development/CMS tools might be a shortcut to basic web development without having to learn the languages.  I am only learning for fun/boredom.  The only project I have in mind is to make a dynamic site I can use to highlight my CV.
