My eyes are blurry after I put in my contacts?

I stored my contacts in Visine overnight. I put my contacts in the next day and my eyes have become very red and bloodshot.  I took them out.  Are my contacts ruined and what should I do for my eyes?

  • It was regular visine, not visine for contacts. I have had my contacts out for about 15 hours now.  My eyes have gotten better.  I took two extra strength tylenol last night which reduced the swelling.  I'm wondering if the contacts are completely ruined?  I put them in my solution where they are right now.  Also, what should I do to make my eyes less red- I'm assuming visine will not help me here.

    First thing to do would be to call your Optometrist and get in as soon as you can, and absolutely see your Optometrist before putting any contacts back in your eye. It would be best to throw away the contacts that were soaking in the Visine, and I would recommend throwing the case away as well. There is a good chance that your cornea is compromised from the visine.  That is why you need to go see your optometrist.This answer is not a substitute for professional medical advic...

Well, you know that Visine is not a contact lens storage or disinfectant so I'm assuming you did that because you had no other good choices. Since you said your eye was getting better we will assume there is no infection. Other possibilities are: the Visine had the wrong osmolarity either too hyper- or too hypotonic and that affected the contact lens fit. Another possibility is that the contact lens absorbed and concentrated the chemical preservatives in the Visine and then created a chemical irritation when the contact lens was up against your eye.
