  • Answer:

Essentially, you have two options: Slowly transition into a consultant by asking for more work or finding a new job with more on the managerial/sales/consulting side of things, getting closer and closer to your ideal job over several years; or Take some years to get a post-graduate degree -- any will do, though obviously the more similar to a , the better. Also, having work experience at a large firm (preferably very large) or on will help you. When someone hires you, they'll be thinking about how they can pitch your abilities to their clients. For that, you'll need some expertise in a particular business domain or industry. Working at a large firm is seen as teaching you some best-practices that you can then pass on to similar companies.

I got in with a phd in biomedical sciences, essentially zero business knowledge, and a large interest and enthusiasm for consulting. If you have the lattermost and you have a good cv and do your homework, no reason you shouldn't get in. People at Bain at least have all sorts of backgrounds. Just make sure you are really able to convince yourself and the interviewer why it's the right thing for you now, given your different background.
