How many people are admitted as alternates to Stanford's MA in Education program? Is there any way to improve your chances of getting offered a spot in the incoming class?

  • I was just offered an alternate position in the Stanford MA program in Learning, Design and Technology (LDT). I was wondering what the chances are of being offered a spot now. I know that it depends on how many admits accept, but I was wondering if there's a trend from past years that could give me an idea of the chances. I also would like to know if there's any way to improve your chances of being offered a spot, perhaps with renewed demonstration of interest or more recent accomplishments? Are there any statistics on: -how many people are initially offered admission to the program, compared to the number of spots available ( approximately 20 students each year according to http://suse-ldt.stanford.edu/admissions/faq ) -percent of people who typically accept -how many admits have to turn down their spot before an alternate is offered a spot -how alternates are selected from the list of alternates (if 50 spots become available but there are 100 alternates, how do the 50 get chosen?)

  • Answer:

Congrats! I just graduated from this program and you're closer than many people to get to being accepted. Many students who are accepted also applied to similar programs at Harvard and Northwestern, and may choose to go there instead for a variety of reasons. Others may decide that they don't want to use a year of salary earnings or that they can't afford the move or the tuition. I don't have any sense of of how many people are accepted from the alternate list, but I do know that the program director and GSE admissions team are quite responsive and would be happy to talk further with you about your chances. Even if you aren't accepted for this year, you should still try to attend GSE events and d.school workshops to stay connected to the community and work being done. It might help further strengthen your application if you choose to apply for next year.
