Can you give me a sample of a recommendation letter?

Should I show my employee a draft of his MBA recommendation letter and let him give feedback?

  • An employee has asked me to submit ratings and a recommendation letter to several MBA programs. He's like to review a draft before I submit it. Should I decline or show him the letter. Should I consider incorporating his feedback on the letter?

  • Answer:

Yes, I think this is acceptable assuming these two very critical points: 1) You are comfortable sharing what you wrote. 2) That you can vouch for everything requested in the employee's feedback. Almost all business schools require multiple recommendations. Often times applicants will select people to write recommendations that highlight different aspects of their skills, achievements and personality. If for example, your employee was hoping that you would emphasize something like leadership and noticed that you didn't include a particularly good example that you may have unintentionally forgotten, it would be reasonable to ask that something like this be mentioned.

Agree with Andy.  I think you should for the excellent reason he gives, but also because I think it's good for your employee to know what you think and which of their strengths you particularly value.    I didn't ask to see my recommenders' letters but I really wish I had done.
