How to populate a Tree with flat JSON?

Is God weird or what?

  • Western religions have some peculiarities, it seems to me.  They believe in a separate monotheistic God who created mankind for companionship with Himself.   They believe this God is love, infinite, omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent.   Man, however, was supposedly given freewill and wasted little time in running a muck with it.  If we are to accept the Biblical version, God creates man.  Then in the interest of providing companionship for this newly created, He creates woman.  They are placed in a beautiful garden of paradise with complete freedom with one major exception, they are not to eat the fruit of one particular tree.  Of course, they soon failed which meant they were now unfit companions for God and were booted out or paradise and into a world where only by sweat, toil and suffering could they survive.   Now, even though the first two creations failed miserably and are subjected to continuous hardship, God now steps up production and begins profusely creating more to populate the entire planet with all of the newly created suffering the same fate of hardship and the first two.  Furthermore, now all of God’s creation is condemned to hell because they are all incapable of living sinless or meeting His standard.  However, God provides a remedy for man and man is free to accept or reject it. The above, it seems to me present us with a whole bunch of interesting questions which I wish to offer for the readers consideration.   The Bible teaches that man has been a major disappointment and source of frustration to God.  In other words a big pain in the butt to the Almighty. If God is  all knowing and perfect why on earth (pun) would He create disappointment for Himself?  Did God one day decide, gee whiz, I’m bored, I think I need a little frustration in my life?  I know, I’ll create some stubborn cantankerous rascals and call them man and woman.  Man will think he knows it all and woman will continuously prove him wrong.  Man will think he is invincible and woman will seduce him and wrap him around her little finger.  Now, that should keep me entertained. As mentioned above, God is condemning everyone He creates, either because He is passing the guilt of the original failure on all the rest or because all the rest are incapable of living sinless anyway.  Either way, all are condemned.  The obvious question, of course, is why did God put a tree there that would lead to their failure in the first place?  The standard religious answer is that it was necessary for them to have free choice otherwise they would be nothing but robots.  This would imply then that God is not omniscient after all.  If He had known there would have been no need for the test and he could have saved not only Himself a lot of disappointment but the man and woman from all the embarrassment and needless suffering.  Furthermore, if God was looking for companionship and did not know and was surprised and disappointed why would He respond by creating billions more to suffer likewise? Even at this point in the creation story, God can see quite well, omniscient or not, that the vast majority are failing the test and failing to even accept His remedy, why then, continue to create sentient beings for eternal punishment?  This simply is not consistent with either wisdom or love it seems to me.  The old argument that God must give man free will to insure that man is complete and not a simple robot just does not hold water.  In trying to absolve God of the horrors of condemnation, religions have devised all sorts of conventions.   They say, God simply gave man free will and if man goes to hell, man sends himself there, not God.  But that is very shallow reasoning and a total distortion of freedom.  Man is given two choices.  Do this or be damned to hell.  That is the same kind of freedom a jealous husband gives his wife when he says, love me and I’ll share my millions or reject me and I’ll stab you in your sleep.  Another example being the thief with gun in hand saying hand over your wallet or take a bullet to the chest.  Such is not freedom but coercion, plain and simple. Furthermore, we are taught that man is incapable of living sinless, so who’s fault is sin?  Is man guilty of that which is beyond his control to avoid?  Must man ask his creator for forgiveness for the way he was created? If God is love, would love  rule by fear?  Yet, is that not precisely what evangelism is doing when they travel all over trying to save people’s souls by pounding their fist with one hand, waving the book with other and shouting, be saved or be damned?  Would love be gratified by people coming into the fold out of fear?  Would a God of love employ such tactics?  http://openobserver.wordpress.com

I find it strange that you say "Western religions have" then go on to describe ideas found more prominently in middle-eastern belief systems than in any other.  Indigenous western (and here I assume that by "western" you really mean european) belief systems do not generally include infinite, omniscient, omnipotent, or omnipresent gods.  They do not purport that "god is love."  Further, they do not necessarily suppose that mankind was created for the sake of companionship.  So, right at the start, your question is itself problematic. The rest, while thorough and appreciable, is rooted strictly in a singular (again, middle-eastern) set of ideas, to which I can not relate well enough to muster a complete answer.  But I will say at least this much: it is perhaps not "God" that is weird, but rather we who sometimes make it seem so.

Your question makes me laugh and think at the same time. Christianity says, god created man (Adam and Eve) and sent them to Earth for disobeying him (eating the forbidden fruit, which gave them the knowledge of right and wrong, desires, passion and sex). Hinduism says, god created man to repent for his sins of the past lives, to achieve the ultimate goal, salvation, liberation from the series of births and rebirths. So basically, you are given a chance, when you are born as a human being, a chance to attain Moksha and free your soul from this cycle and be one with god. So a question arises here, why did god create so many souls in the first place? and by this logic it is obvious to assume that all these souls were sent to earth in the form of human beings in their first life and almost all of them did something wrong and depending on the degree of their wrongdoings they were born again into different species. Some of them gained Moksha and some reborn as humans, so basically those born again as humans did no bad or no good in their last life. Now taking into account the increasing population, where are all these souls, taking birth as humans coming from? To keep the count of souls constant i.e assuming no souls are created and none are destroyed, some species has to go extinct every year (when we actually see the figures, there has to be more than 1 species that has to go extinct to keep the soul count constant). If a human does something “wrong” he is born in a lower class (taking human beings as the uppermost class of species) and he has to earn that chance again of salvation. So basically, if I am born as a dog in my next life, then no matter how much I repent and do good, I will earn just a chance of salvation with no memory of my previous life so I have to gain all the knowledge of god and salvation and good and bad again and who knows how much wrong I do while gaining all this knowledge (Here I have assumed that I have the knowledge of good and bad and salvation and god when I am born as a dog and I try to earn that second chance). Now, looking at it with Christianity point of view, there is no concept of life after death here, either the man goes to heaven or hell. How long does it stay in hell? I don’t know. But again, bible says, repent for what you’ve done and you will be forgiven. So basically, I do something wrong (intentionally or unintentionally, doesn’t matter) and I repent for it from the bottom of my heart and I am forgiven and this continues until I die, voila, I go to heaven, this against the guy who might have just stolen something from someone and forgot to repent and got sent to hell. Now coming to the point of creating humans for entertainment, I really don’t think that  that is why god created humans (I am again assuming here that god exists and he created humans and everything else). If he did, then hasn’t he gotten enough entertainment already with all the terrorism, politics, Oprah, Brangelina, Rakhi Sawant and what not. Now, if man has free will then why does god need to judge me on what I do, if he really has to do that then why did he give me free will in the first place, also if god sent Adam and Eve from paradise to earth for disobeying him and he sends humans to hell from earth if they disobey him, where does he send them if they disobey him in hell too and commit more sins. And how did I disobey god that I was directly sent to earth as a baby? So if you ask me, god is really very very weird. But I believe in the other side of the coin here. Religion and law & order go hand in hand, Why do I say this? All the religious books and scriptures are so beautifully written and the way in which the existence of god and his love for man is explained is truly amazing. Anyone reading them or learning religion through various sources will be a god lover, no doubt in it. This is the best part of it all; this is why they were written, to be believed. They are written so precisely keeping in mind every single detail and questions that might arise and the way it has evolved over the years has made it more perfect. It is very tempting to believe that there is one great entity that created everything and is looking after it, that decides what is wrong and what is right and punishes someone who is wrong while rewards the right. But this is all what is written, just written. Law & Order on the other hand derives from religion. Religion differentiates wrong from right, it defines sin and vice. But not everyone follows religion, what to do if you want everyone to do only the “right” thing? You define law. You make laws of punishing someone who behaves in a certain way which is perceived as “wrong”. But that’s not it. Not only is law & order derived from religion, religion exists so law & order can. If there is no religion, there is no wrong or right, everyone is free to do what they want and no one has the right to stop them. The true “free will” man has; the world where rapes, murder, and stealing is not wrong. And this is just a small idea of what the world would be without law. If religion doesn’t exist, there is no way law can. Everything is fair in the world without religion (viz without law), if someone is weak in some aspect then the stronger person, without any guilt and fear of the “punishment”, can take advantage of him in any way he desires. On the other hand, if there is no law & order then the sole purpose of existence of religion fails. Because, I say it again, not everyone follows religion. Hence, religion and law & order go hand in hand.

God is not weird. God is not making us suffer. We are the only ones to blame for our sufferings. Remember that we are given the free will, the very same free will that God gave Adam and Eve. The free will we have these days is the same free will that http://www.bible-knowledge.com/adam-and-eve/ used when they disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. Our sufferings are consequences of our each action. Each event that has happened in the past and will continue to happen in the future are stages until we reach the climax which is known as the Second Coming of Christ. The pain and sufferings we have are necessary to let us realize that despite our free will, we still need God to fill the voids in our lives. What seems to be weird is the evolved behavior of man to ignore the presence of God despite His obvious existence.

Its a good question but its very subjective. When I say subjective I am trying to portray that people often don't distinguish between God and religion. There are a million religions in the world and each has its own story (myth as I like to call it) about its God. I see most answers talk about the Judaic religions like Judaism, Christianity and Islam. If we look at the Judaic religions and there respective Gods (who is roughly the same patriarchal figure) there are very similar. These similarities exist because these religions branched out from the same lineage. Christianity(~300AD) came out of Judaism and later Islam (~700AD). These religions talk about a single omnipotent God who has unlimited power (coz he created everything). The funny part is how human these Judaic Gods are. I agree according to the Judaic scriptures we are made in the image of God but how bizarre is it for a God to get jealous because we won't worship him (or accept him as our lord and savior as our christian friends say). I mean if you created the whole universe and made the laws that govern it be a little more mature and not be jealous. Francis Fukayama    a prominent historian said the End of History has come when the world had embraced a liberalism (Democracy and capitalism) and competing forms like fascism and communism failed (fall of USSR), emphasizing secular societies and  individual freedom was the way of the future. When world powers (which are basically human) can accept a secular society and prosper how can a God be jealous. I find it petty. I thing hell and heaven etc have been covered by others so I wouldn't like to talk about it. Coming to India and Hinduism. I like Christianity and Islam over Hinduism because they are bound by there faith in scripture. Hinduism is so vague and has so many scriptures its tough to call it a religion. There are so many sects and belief systems in Hinduism that it more a collection of related belief systems than a religion in itself. Coming to Hindu gods, would I look up to them today and find a sense of inspiration, my answer would be no. I don't get it, if you were God and descended to Earth would you fight a petty war or else give valuable information to farmers to teach them new agricultural techniques so then can feed millions or give a cure for a disease or promote education.  All Gods (Judaic and Hindu) have human feeling and act like any medieval uneducated person. Which God has taken a human form come down to earth and actually contributed to technological knowledge and science. If you can perform miracles why would you cure one person with a disease when you can destroy the whole disease in a second. I really don't understand God and why we even need a person like him. All my religious friends say I have seen God's actions, I have seen his signs, I have been touched by him. If God really exists I am really disappointed in how immature and  childish he(or she, I dont want to be sexist) is. Finally coming to morality and religion. I find it repulsive when people say we get our morality from religion. Our law (In India) is based on the western law which itself was derived from Roman law. Today in India or any developed country no penal code is based on any religious text or scripture (except the middle eastern countries like Saudi which is a shit place to live unless you are a Muslim). We are social people and we need a social contract to sustain a society. We are genetically altruistic to our kin and our extended kin (society) and don't need scriptures to tell us that. If someone says that the is only reason he is not murdering me or raping me is because its forbidden in scriptures I really don't know what to say. There are several civilizations who have such diverse religious beliefs and different scriptures most of them share common moral values. Any rational person can say killing others is a dick think to do and so is stealing, you don't need divine intervention (Mohammad getting messages from god) to know that. Yeah I think I went a little of topic but the point is I really think God is weird. May be a little too weird to exist. I believe the European Enlightenment has giving more to today's society than all the religions.
