How To Organize Yourself?

How do top IIT students organize their time in general, and how do they organize their day?

  • how many hours do they sleep? When do they sleep? How many hours do they study? How do they beat stress?

  • Answer:

Organizing time in IIT is rather simple. Actually people who keep things simple can get hours of free time. Here are few pointers : 1. Attend as many classes as you can. Each hour in the class reduces your time to catch up by 2-3 hours. The material is relatively easy most of the time except for the context. Most professors leave many hints on what they want to test. 2. Know what you enjoy and do it with heart Try to see what you really enjoy (playing tennis or reading novels or video gaming or just roaming around the campus) and have a friend who shares similar interest. even a few minutes of what you enjoy should get you charged up. 3. Sleep as much as you can and never less than 8 hours/Day : Sleep is probably the best way to keep your spirits high. Do not let any normal deadline get into your sleep cycle. If you do have to pull an all nighter do it for item 2. 4. Get a buddy who will watch your back and form a team: I met one of my best buddies in the first week of classes and he was btech project partner as well as a partner for many projects. Trust me this gave us unfair advantage on many things. We used to work just a few hours but used to get a lot done in those since we were able to communicate really really well. We once did an experiment with a giant motor without speaking a single word and just signaling each other due to the noise. 5. Do not do out right dumb things : stay free of abusive substances and relationships. Remembering your roots will always help with this. Many of my friends wasted time, youth and energy for a nugget of learning like do not go after a unreliable girl/boy or do not abuse your brain with substances. 6. Remember that there is at-least one guy/girl better than you and one worse than you in everything. Do not try to beat this by working harder than required. I was good at physics and puzzles until I met my match. I thought I sucked at experiments until I met a guy who didnt flip a switch being an EE for 4 years ! So its actually quite simple to manage time in IIT. Actually I had most free time in all my education during IIT since everything was quite well organized and you knew where you stand in the class. There is of-course the security of being surrounded by smart people.

Most of the "Top" IIT students whom I know personally, don't require an organizer to plan their daily chores. Its their nature and attitude which make them do the things on their own. They go to classes daily and attend the lectures. This helps them standout from rest of the students who don't either go to classes or listen to lectures (well there are some exceptions which I know). It is not like toppers sleep less, most of the students at IIT take a normal sleep of 8-10 hours (it may go beyond 12 hours for some) during holidays and minimum up to 5-6 hours during the weekdays. But it doesn't imply that they study rest of the time. They study only when they feel like studying and in my opinion it is a right way to study. Just keeping the book in front of you 24/7 doesn't mean something is getting into your head.Generally speaking, a major amount of time of students goes only in doing assignments. Now important part comes is beating stress. "Top" students generally don't take much stress because they know they'll get something good (in terms of job). Even if they do get stressed, they try to share their feelings and thoughts with someone they trust, who can give them the right advice, which makes them come out of stress.
