What is a cached web service?

Is there a need for a web service that monitors the health, status and contents of a webpage identified by a Url?

  • Lets say there is a API called getInfo(url, options) which provides useful information about a page identified by an url. The services might include the last cached contents of the page (whole page) specific data (e.g relationship status from a facebook profile, book title from a amazon page) health (http status, last modified) What kind of companies and web services would pay for such a service?

  • Answer:

Not to be a smart alec, but doesn't http://ChangeDetection.com + any number of site monitoring tools do most of these things already? I'm intrigued by the concept of measuring how a page's relationship status changes, and I'm not aware of anything that does that currently, but I'm not sure that there would be a huge demand for a service that did all three. Having said that, it sounds cool. Be sure to drop me a link if you build it and I'll be sure to blog about it.
