Do you think that CS or ECE students can work for years in MNC considering the work load they put on?
-
I so want to know the views of seniors on this. I know cs and ece students get the most big packages than any of other branches but what about the life of students who are working in MNCs or other big companies. I heard that they have to work for atleast 12 hours for the packages like 10-15 Lac. Is it true that their life becomes too much hectic? Do they ever think, Life would be better if they have chosen other branches which have more scope in PSU's where life is much easier? What do you advise to the fresher's joining 1st year of Engineering? I so want to hear from people who are currently working in MNCs or gaint companies like Google, Microsoft etc.

Answer:
Thanks for the A2A. Though I'm not from any of the companies you mentioned. I've interacted with quite a good number of them and can share their experience. It is not hectic for these guys because they love doing it. That is how you get into these firms on the first hand. An innate love for coding or working on these modules is what keeps them at work even if it is not mandatory. Most importantly, you cannot compare a private firm to a PSU. The challenges you get to face and the scope for innovation or free thinking is unparalleled in private firms. You're not given any significant stuff to deal with (atleast in earlier stages) in PSUs. It is upto you to decide what you'd want to do. If you enjoy what you're doing, then the number of work hours wouldn't matter for anything. Good Luck !!

It has been 40 years since first generation of programmers have emerged. In the last 40 years, software has evolved multiple generations, companies have been born, lived , outlived and closed down too. However what hasnt changed is the amount of work for any technology based professional, it always has been proportional. If the complexity was less, the systems were slow and viceversa. It is hard to generalize the work load of companies(MNC) in terms of number of hours per day, on an average 8 - 10 hours is the norm. There are extremes too, 16 - 18 hrs a day also. If the work is monotonous and deterministic, 8 - 10 hours should be sufficient, but with varying schedules, requirements, complexity, work loads shoot up and hence the 12 hour ordeal. However its not true, the work load stays the same for all the 365 days in year, there are tough days, easy days and average days. What is more important is how adaptable you are, can you unlearn and relearn in time, and take decisions which support your career. Hence it is unnecessary to ponder over the 12 hr stories you might have heard, a few people put in 6 hours and get 12 hour output, but to reach there they have struggled in the early years. No Pain No Gain. My advise to any fresher (of any stream) is, do Not keep a direct comparision of salary to hours, learn as much as you can and consult people when taking important career decisions. There is no free lunch anywhere, PSU or MNC. As you sow, so you reap.

"No bees,no http://honey.No hardwork,no money" According me it's not about ece or cse.without hardwork nothing is achieved in today's competitive world. Nowadays only people who fall in reservation category can get Govt Jobs & others who can give bribe & take bribe. Talking about health, MNCs provide all the needed facilities like good food, good atmosphere, GYM etc to maintain the same. Even some MNCs provide entertainment facilities too. There are lot of people who have quit Govt jobs & gone to work in MNCs. Therfore working at any good MNCs is not a bad deal.

I worked with Amazon for 1.5 years. They pay good and you can expect a fair amount of work load. Long hours are due to inherent complexity of CSE. But it's not long hours which are frutrating it's nature of job where you hardly use CSE fundamentals and work is quite boring, most of the time you ned to read someone else's code modify it. I love the problem solving which involved in CSE basics but they are absent here. Some time work do get frustrating and sitting in a cubical for whole life is a nightmare for some. Few people do think about mech and civil so they could have cracked IES and all. But grass is greener at other side holds true here. If you dont love what you do, you will end up unhappy and it doesn't really matter what branch you have taken.
