What are the essentials for a secret trip?

What are some essentials I should pack for my trip to Vietnam next week (09/23/2013)?

  • I will be in Saigon for two weeks. I have a friend I'll be staying with but he has to work during the week so I'll be doing a lot of exploring on my own. I'm considering taking a boat trip down the Mekong and also a 3 day "easy rider" motorcycle tour. Any suggestions on how I should pack?

  • Answer:

Bring a tube of ointment or cream to treat insect bites ( mosquitoes, fleas, etc.). Believe me, you're going to need it! Other than that I supposed a good bottle of sun cream wouldn't go to waste, even if it's rainy season, you'll never know. ;) The sun cream stuffs you can find in Vietnam are useless by the way, so don't rely on them. I personally don't think you need rain coat or umbrella really. You can get those easily in Vietnam so why bother carrying them all the way from wherever you are? :) For a backpacker other essentials may include a hat and a pair of real good sunglasses. And when you've got all of that, you're all set for your journey. :) Have fun with your stay in HCMC! Don't forget to be careful, too. It can be quite dangerous sometimes.

I hope you're aware that October is the rainy season in south Vietnam. Expect lots of rain each afternoon, so make sure to pack accordingly (long raincoat, umbrella, ...). Even if it is October, it still is very hot and humid, so bring lots of spare clothes, you will need all of it!
