How to Fetch Gmail Contacts?

How can I get my CSV contacts file fully into Gmail or Apple Addressbook?

  • I need help importing contacts from Excel/CSV into Google/Apple Addressbook My methods are failing. Here's the deal I exported all My Contacts from gmail (4800) and imported to Excel. Offline, over several weeks, I scrubbed the data down and reduced the size to 1600. #soproud Now I want to bring this new contacts regime into power. So I deleted all contacts from my gmail contacts and went to upload my CSV produced by Excel. I also deleted all contacts from my Mac Addressbook.app. Clean start! I figured I'd upload to http://gmail.com and have the syncing power unite the forces of good. Problem 1: Excel CSV --> Gmail Contacts The mailing address info doesn't populate the proper fields, but instead it shows up in the catchall "Notes" field. Not good. So then I thought, "fine, I'll import the Excel/CSV to apple Addressbook and export as a vCard file." Problem 2: Excel CSV --> Mac Addressbook For some people, I only have city/state/country data and not street info. For these records, Mac Addressbook fails to import ANY address data. I can see it in the CSV file in textedit, but the Addressbook.app ignores it. So then I thought I'd use my free trial at http://Pipelinedeals.com to import my CSV and export a hopefully-more-compatible CSV. but Problem 3: Excel CSV --> Pipelinedeals --> CSV Pipelinedeals doesn't keep my notes field attached to each record upon export. I could really use some help. My life was not meant to be spent fighting with light database format compatibility. What's the best way to get my Excel contacts back into either Google or Mac Addressbook with all fields intact? Google doesn't provide a straightforward field mapping for its contacts standard. I have no idea what Apple's problem is with interpreting my CSV. argh thanks

Robert Quick on G+ solved this. Basic reverse engineering. I did the below. Based on the "Google CSV" generated by Gmail for the single contact, I just pasted in the corresponding rows from my own CSV Try this... create a contact in Gmail where you have something filled in every single field. Make the entry something you recognize as being that field. then export that ONE contact in various formats.. CSV, VCF etc... That way you have every single field in that export you can now use to compare why certain fields don't go into specific areas. To fix, while having in excel, to replace to fix so that the headers for specific fields are correct. Also do the same in other app you want to import into by creating one contact with ALL of the fields filled out then export it as CSV and compare to the Gmail's export and fix problem.

Go to http://www.conXt.com - start a free account. Once you are logged in, click on the 'more options' button on the import and choose 'custom import'. Upload your csv file (important! Make sure it actually IS a csv file and not an excel document masquerading as an excel document - the best option is to save your current file as a .csv file and then DO NOT OPEN IT in excel).  conXt will attempt to match the fields in the csv file with conXt fields. If they don't match, just use the dropdown menu next to each field to put it where it belongs. When you are happy, click import. At this point, you might as well use conXt as your address book since it's by far superior! (OK - I'm a co-founder...but its true!). Or you could simply choose More>>export and choose gmail format. Then you can upload your newly exported csv file into gmail contacts (but really, why would you abandon the tool that just solved your problem?)  Cheers, Eric Greenberg

CSV to vCard converter is a perfect third http://www.exceltovcard.com/csv-to-vcard-for-mac.html without any loss of data. By using this tool you can convert your contacts from CSV to vCard format and then you can use vCard contacts in Mac address book.
