What is college actually like?

What do you think about quizzes like "Which college should you actually go to"?

  • Here is a survey which purports to tell you which college is the best fit. It's clearly anything but scientific, but I wonder if people actually put any credence into things like this? 21,000 likes on Facebook indicates lots of people have taken this survey. (I have to admit I did too--MIT? Really?)  http://www.buzzfeed.com/kristinchirico/which-college-should-you-actually-go-to I  am asking this question to discover if people put any stock in surveys  like this. It is 'fun' to do but I wonder if it has any effect on  people's decsions or expectations about the college fit.

  • Answer:

I got Duke. What and where is a Duke? On a serious note, it's BuzzFeed, and therefore is sensationalized crap.

I took it, and I got Yale, so it must be valid.

I got Duke, but I barely recognize most of the people in those questions and honestly I'm afraid I don't know anything about Duke.  It is good?.  What is the Canadian equivalent of Duke? The snippet is accurate -- or it used to be.  I'm more mellow now. "You’re basically a tiger mother, or a tiger father if you’re a dude.  Yes, you can be a little aggressive, but that’s because you care so  much about everything that you do that it’s practically leaking out of  you. Your struggle is learning how to hone that passion into something  great." I guess I would at least look up Duke after getting an answer like that.  Probably out of my league though.

Considering the fact that none of those questions have anything to do with choosing college fit except for what segment of pop culture would be most prevalent there, no I would put zero stock into it. Now, if the quiz asked questions like: 1. Would you prefer a technical education, a liberal, broad education, a mix of both, no education, or 'I have no idea why I'm going to college' 2. Rural, Urban, or Suburban campus? 3. List the following in order of importance to you: art, music, partying, food, nature, sports 4. North, South, East, or West? Choose all that apply. 5. Big or small? (Selection gradient 1-10) 6. Research or no? (Selection gradient 1-10) 7. Corporate affiliation/alumni employer affiliation. (The investment banker/business school question since in those careers its imperative to go to a target school). Etc. If those question were asked I'd put slightly more stock into it. The first question is the most important I feel. If you don't know what kind of education you want or why you're getting it, my advice is don't apply yet and take a year off and work, travel, discover yourself. Otherwise, you will most likely sabotage your own future and dig a rut of debt and unhappiness. As a side note, I got Yale which I would've gone to had I been accepted, interistingly enough.
