Is mechatronics a good field?

I am thinking to take mechatronics. Is it a good option? And in what field will I get a job?

  • Answer:

Yes it is a good but rarely explored option. It is an interdisciplinary stream combining knowledge from Electrical,Mechanical,Control,Telecommunication and Computer Engg. streams. Now I do not know any premier institute in India that offers this branch. Also I have not heard much about this stream, but here goes: 1)Mostly you will have to study at Master's or Doctorate level in this branch to have in-depth knowledge of its various sub-disciplines.I doubt it is even offered at Bachelor level. 2)You will be very employable and will be paid handsomely. 3)Mostly your job will take you to USA or some top-notch tech. country like Japan or Germany. But you will require unusual motivation to excel in this stream.Competition will be very stiff. All the best.Work hard, there is lots to achieve.

Well as you might know Mechatronics is a blend of branches of engineering like Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Computer Science. It focuses mainly on design and production of automated equipment. Since it comprises of various branches of engineering it has wide scope in India as well as in abroad. In the future more job openings would be available in this area. In a world continually transformed by technology, you’ll be in high demand in organisations ranging from large, global corporations to smaller, niche firms in many diverse fields such as automotive, aerospace, defense, product development, manufacturing and processing plants, software and equipment. After completing degree in Mechatronics you can opt for both Govt. and private sector. So in my opinion go for it!  For any other information you can refer to the following article featured in the Hindu: -http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-features/tp-educationplus/mechatronics-has-wide-scope/article3952808.ece

You already know how it can be defined etc from the above answers. I just graduated in BE Mechatronics from Manipal Institute of Technology. What I have noticed about it was, that although it really is a good stream in engineering it is not much appreciated in India. Here a mechatronics graduate will be considered a second grade alternative to a mechanical graduate. There are no job profiles specifically designed for us. Robotics and automation (the most important profile for a mechatronics graduate) development in India does not happen, at the most we have plants that assemble things that are designed and manufactured abroad. The best company we had for placements was ABB, even there the profile offered was primarily a management related from what I understand. So I would say oppurtunities for mechatronics in India are very few, but then doing your masters from places like germany and usa you can give yourself a chance to get some actual mechatronics job, where you are part of the design and manufacture process. oh and the field you can a get a job in india, IT IT IT Automotive Mechanical Jobs (you will be lucky if you get one of the last 2 options..:P) All this said, things can and mostly will change in the coming years.
